Faith and Fear

Sometimes when it is late in the game, you gotta punt on first down even when you’re down by 10 points.

I began this particular blog in April 2011.  All it had was the title and the quote.  For some reason I quit the blog and moved on.

People fear Ebola, Hamas, terrorists, marriage, etc. People are too scared today.  Some folks are making a killing helping other overcome fears.  One of the greatest thoughts about overcoming fear is from FDR’s First Inaugural Address.  He said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” (click here for full text of the address). Others trying to inspire to overcome fear cite Marianne Williamson, the noted peace advocate, who penned the famous lines used by Nelson Mandela and in the movie Coach Carter:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. (from A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles”, Ch. 7, Section 3 (1992), p. 190.)

The quotes about fear are legion.  The answers and solutions to ending fear are just as legion and endless. Frankly, I get tired of people trying to inspire and blah, blah, blah.  So, why does my view matter?  It doesn’t because people who are afraid will ALWAYS be afraid. Even if I wanted to try, I could not fix fear in people.  However, in the next few moments, I will offer some insight into why one SHOULD punt the ball as indicated in the opening line.

Why punt? My defense is not that good. My team is freaking LOSING!!!   Maybe…maybe not.  All score indicates is that the other teams has scored more this particular day.  It does not show how good my defense is over the course of a week, month, season, or lifetime.  So, PUNT away!

I know my defense includes God, Mary, my family (both blood and NONblood), friends, and so many others.  That is MUCH bigger than any offense can handle. All I am saying is get over public speaking, death, rain clouds, or any of the other 35 freaky, irrational fears . Enjoy life and PUNT AWAY…unless you are facing clowns.  Clowns are scary!!!

  1. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of courage and strength and sound mind. 🙂
